WE'VE SELECTED A NEW CHARITY: LITTLE ESSENTIALS

 

 

For this quarter, we are pleased to announce our THIRD charity is:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Little Essentials is a Brooklyn based non-profit that collects and donates baby supplies -- clothing, car seats, cribs, strollers, etc., to families living in poverty. In doing so, the organization helps promote the safety and well-being of young children and prevents children from entering or remaining in the foster care system. Since their founding (in a garage in Park Slope), they've helped over 18,000 children! Additionally, the program empowers families through education, programming, and workshops. They are rapidly expanding and would like to increase their donations and add more programming, so let's help them reach that goal!

 

Our committee will hand deliver our group's donation as soon as we have received everyone's checks. If you haven't sent in your check, be sure to email 100womennyc@gmail.com to coordinate.

 

 

If you'd like to suggest an organization for us to consider, please prepare a presentation for our next meeting.

 

PRESENTATIONS

 

Presentations should be simple and not overly formal.  You may need to do a small bit of research in order to clearly present a charity. Here is a list of things that you should be prepared to discuss:

 

What is the name of the organization?

Where is the organization located?

What is the mission of the organization?

What purpose does the organization serve? (who, what do they do, how do they do it)

How would the organization benefit from receiving the donation? How will the funds be used?

Who is responsible for discharging funds?

What are their administrative fees? (Hint: they should not have any!)

Are they a recognized 501(c)(3)?

If chosen, to whom would the group make a check payable to?

For our inaugural meeting we selected: God's Love We Deliver

 

We had 54 members donate a total of $3,255! This is super exciting, especially

since this means we have TONS of room to grow! God's Love We Deliver was

blown away with our contribution. Our donation paid for the production and

delivery of almost 400 meals for those living with serious illness in NYC --

hooray! A big pat on the back to everyone who contributed! They played the following video for us about their organization. It gave us chills! If anyone is interested in volunteering with GLWD further, reach out to Jessica Cox for more information.

 

Change for Kids is an organization that partners with elementary schools in high-poverty NYC communities to provide targeted programs and leadership support. This non-profit works to empower underprivileged children in the hopes of improving and transforming the education system. The program believes a strong elementary experience sets students on a path toward college and career success. Today, Change for Kids serves over 3,000 individual students at 8 public schools in the NY area. The executive director from Change for Kids came to our meeting to thank  the group

 

and tell us a little more about their amazing organization. They currently work with 8 public schools in high poverty areas of NYC, but the need is enormous - there are 501 such schools in the city! Our donation of almost $3,000 is going to make a huge impact at the newest CFK school, PS 182 in East Harlem. Our donation specifically supported rigorous and dynamic educational programs for 20 students!  They played this video for us about their organization. There are a lot of other volunteer opportunities - from school beautification days to being a guest story reader.
